Tantrums In Public

We've all been there...going through the check out lane with our kids and they see the treats and candy that has been placed there by the clerks. Or for some it happens in the isles of the store before we even reach the checkout when our kids see all the wonderful things that they can't have. I'm mentioning this because when I was at World Market finishing up my shopping this week with my youngest and I heard a tantrum happening at the front of the store. Not just a normal everyday tantrum... this one could be heard by the men stocking the shelves all the way in the back. I've seen this a few times and have absolutely been there myself a few times too. I never knew what triggered it maybe it was due to a much needed nap or was is was because they were going through a phase, between 3-4 was the hardest for me. But I wanted to somehow let that mom know that we were all on the same team and not to be embarrassed, because at one time or another all of our kids have had total meltdowns in public. And then we are struck with trying to calm them down and discipline at the same time. It it happens to the best of us and don't worry you're still a good mom.

Crawling

My youngest started crawling about a week ago and I'm noticing that my life suddenly became even more busy than it was before. She finds things on the floor that I can't even see and then puts them in her mouth. I keep clean floors but she is a detective. Things that ended up in the mouth this week are the following.

a piece of carpet
a Lego (my 5 yr old hid under the rug)
dried cat throw up (oh my God!)

just to name a few. Thank heavens that I'm always right next to her when these things happen, but geez. So,
I've been making extra sure that nothing but her toys are on the floor by getting down on her level and scouting it out.

Girl Scout Cookies

Is it wrong to lie to your 5yr old son about Cookies?

I ask this because I came out of Fred Myers tonight and low and behold a voice from behind sweetly said " would you like to buy some Girl Scout cookies" I admit that my voice went up a little when I replied "yes, I do". This was my moment to get what I deserved after a week of my needs coming last, now it was my turn and this was my prize. I practically skipped to the car cookies in hand. I returned home to my husband, 10 month old daughter, and 5 yr old son with the food for dinner, and casually left the cookies in the car. The next day we hopped in the car to head to the library, a common occurrence, and my clever, sometimes too clever, son says "mom, why are there 2 boxes of cookies pushed under the seat ?". Trying to think fast I replied "oh, those are for a friend of mine... I'm dropping them off to her later today" and he said well why can't I have any? Well....hey you love Lady Gaga don't you? Let's listen to that. And it worked a change of the subject and that was the end of the conversation. What kind of mother am I to lie about cookies just because I want them all for myself? While driving I laughed a little out loud to myself about the situation, a situation that 5 years ago would not have been an issue. Back then I could have just ripped open the box and had them right then. Funny how the smallest things change when you become a mom and you have to carefully plot a way to still be able to enjoy those little things that you used to be able to with such ease. So here I sit... a day and a half later enjoying my thin mint cookies with a cup of milk and soaking in my peaceful hour that I'll have before bed. Ahh! Now, I just need to remember to dispose of the evidence before everyone wakes up.
